JOHN EDNIE
1876-1934, Glasgow, UK
He was born in Glasgow but raised in Edinburgh, where, on leaving school he went to the Herriot Watt College.
In 1897 he won a travel scolarship to study English architecture and interior decoration.
Later he was recruited by the Glasgow retailers and furnishers to work in their design departments.
During a certain period he worked full-time as director of the Industrial Art Section of the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College.
In 1906 he began designing on a freelance basis.
He was member of the Scottish Guild of Handicraft and the Edinburgh Architectural Association, through which he maintained a number of professional links.
In 1926 he moved to London and two years later settled, with his wife, in Cairo where he worked as director of the School of Art.
