ALEXANDER CALDER
22 July 1898, Philadelphia - 11 November 1976, New York, USA
Descent of a family of sculptors, he studied engineering before going on to painting and, later, to metal-work.
In 1926, he went to Paris where he lived for twelve years and where he got to know Surrealists, Dadaists and the principal representatives of the De Stijl movement (Mondrian and Van Doesburg).
In 1928 he exhibited for the first time in New York showing his wire sculptures.
Drawn to non figuratif art, he constructed his first mobiles in 1932.
