HERBERT BOECKL
3 June 1894, Klagenfurt - 20 January 1966, Vienna, Austria
He began to study architecture but gave it up to devote himself entirely to painting.
His style was clearly influenced by Cezanne but developed to Expressionism.
He travelled in Sicily, Germany and went to Paris where he worked for a while.
When he returned to Vienna he produced expressionistic works which blended the main european currents in painting with the tendencies prevailing in modern Austria.
In 1952 he went to Spain for a few months but soon returned to paint some mural in the Benedictine Chapel at Sekau. Those works are considered the most important examples of modern religious art in Austria.
He also worked as a professor and rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
