ANDRE DERAIN
10 June 1880, Chatou - 8 September 1954, Garches, France
Encouraged by Vlaminck he started painting and also working in sculpture, printmaking, décor and book illustration.
In 1904 he joined the Fauves, getting to know Matisse, Braque and Picasso..
From 1908 his compositions became geometric, almost approaching Cubism.
After the First War he turned to classical art and produced a series of powerful works in an archaistic idiom, landscapes, nudes, portraits, and still lives.
He was an eclectic artist but his lack of self-confidence caused him to waste his own real gifts and prevented him from becoming a major artist of his period.
