Began to study art in 1917 at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux Arts of Paris.
In 1919 exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne.
When he travelled to Belgium and Holland took contact with the Flemish and Dutch painters and got a certain influence.
In 1934 he married with the painter Marguerite Louppe. In the same year he participated in the Venice Biennale with six paintings.
In 1936 he became a professor at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris,
He received the Graden Club Price of the Carnegie Institute in 1939.
With the explosion of the World War II he was mobilized.
In 1949 he was appointed at the National School of Fine Arts in Paris.
And, ten years later, he moved to the United States for a certain time, just when he knew the consecration in Japan, thanks to the exhibition devoted to him.
During his artistic life he also realized sets and costumes, and illustrations with color lithographes.
