JOHN SINGER SARGENT
12 January 1856, Florence, Italy
14 April 1925, London, United Kingdom
He studied arts in Italy and in Germany.
One of his great influence was the Spanish master Velázquez.
He painted portraits of important personalities but also exotic beauties such as Rosina Ferrara, Carmela Bertagna and Mme X.
As this aroused a negative reaction, he decided to go to live in England.
His painting Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose, with young girls lighting lanterns in an English garden, was immediately purchased by the Tate Gallery.
And in 1894 he was elected an associate of the Royal Academy.
During his life he painted 900 oil paintings, more than 2.000 watercolours and hundreds of sketches and charcoal drawings.
During his last years he was focused on landscapes, documenting his travels from Tyrol to Corfu and Florida.
In his private life it was referred that, as homossexual, he had personal relations with Prince Edmond de Polignac and Count Robert de Montesquieu.
He has been subject of recent exhibitions in several important museums.
