HELMUT
NEWTON
(1920-2004)
(1920-2004)
This
German-Australian photographer was born and raised in Berlin, Germany
but, as a son of German Jewish parents he fled Germany very young to
escape to the Nazis.
In Singapore and Australia worked for British and Australian editions of the famous fashion magazines. And later also to the French Vogue developing close relationships with Karl Lagerfield and Yves Saint Laurent.
An heart attack in the seventies changed his life and he devoted himself entirely to art. At that time he became very popular mostly because of his erotic work.
But in the exhibition I had the chance to visit in the Amsterdam Photography Museum Foam, I could conclude that he is much more than that and he belongs to the list of the most important artists in the history of photography.
The majority of his work is housed in the Berlin Museum of Photography.
He died in 2004 as a result of a car accident.
