PAUL GAUGUIN
7 June 1846, Paris, France
8 May 1903, Atuina, French Polynesia
Post impressionist painter who became popular only after his death.
He was a complete artist. Painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramist and writer.
Gauguin spent three years as a pilot assistant in the merchant marine and when he returned to Paris he worked as a stockbroker.
In 1882, with the stock market crashed, he decided to become a full time painter.
In 1887 he visited Panama and spent a few months in the Martinique islands.
In 1890 he visited Tahiti and stayed for 3 year until he returned to France continuing to paint on Tahitian subjects.
He was not a lucky and happy man. He had 3 children but the first one died with pneumonia, the second one of a blood infection and the third one only a few days after his birth, on Christmas day.
But, besides all that, he was and stays for ever a great master.
