Received his first artistic education in an atelier de decóration.
During a stay in Britany he came in contact with the Pont-Aven group and with Gauguin.
After a Neo-impressionist start, he became one of the pioneers of Cubism, and in 1911 got in contact with Kandinsky.
Between 1911 and 1913 he painted his first abstract pictures.
He was invited to contribute to the Blaue Reiter exhibition in Munich and in 1913 he went to Berlin with Apollinaire and exhibited in the Sturm gallery. This was the beginning of the formes circulaires period.
He spent the years of the war in Portugal with his wife, near his friends Amadeo-Souza Cardoso and Almada Negreiros.
In 1937 he undertook several huge decorative works for the Exposition Universelle.
