JUAN GRIS
23 March 1887, Madrid, Spain
1 May 1927, Boulogne-sur-Seine, France
Son of a merchant and destinated originally for a technical career, he went to Paris in 1906 to devote himself entirely to be a painter.
In the art circles he met Picasso already a leading figure and in which Cubism was the order of the day. His work was created under the influence of Picasso, Braque and Lipchitz.
Nevertheless, he had a style of his own, a cubism more figurative than abstract, with sobriety and refinement.
In 1920 went down with tuberculosis but managed to go on working.
He did some works for Diaghilev's ballets at Monte Carlo and some lithographies for books illustration. Also gave lectures of his artistic beliefs.
His importance was never fully recognised during his lifetime.
