FRANZ MARC
8 February 1880, Munich, Germany
4 March 1916, Braquis, France
He began his education in Munich but didn't stay long because he travelled a lot visiting Italy, France, Greece and other countries in Europe.
He stayed for a while at Sindeldorf where he had the chance to know Kandinsky and Macke and joined with them in their struggle for a revival of painting.
In 1911 he found his true bent and began his famous animal pictures in incandescent colours.
He became a member of the Neue Kunstlervereinigung of Munich and, with his friends, he published the Blaue Reiter, a review that was to inspire the group that adopted that name, and which was exhibited for the first time in Munich in 1911 and in Berlin two years later.
He visited Paris with Macke to see his friend Delaunay with whom he remained in correspondence.
In 1914 went to live at Ried in Bavaria and, mobilized at the outbreak of war, he was killed at Braquis, Verdun.
Under the influence of Kandinsky he developed a free style and the colouring, symbolic in tendency, which is maintained throughout his later works.
For him, animals symbolized all that was natural and pure, and they formed his favourite subject.
