MAX BECKMANN
1884-1950
Born in Leipzig, Germany.
He studied at the Weimar Art School.
His first time in Paris was in 1903 and there he spent two years of great experiences.
In 1906 he contributed to the exhibition of the Berliner Sezession.
With the 1st War he was a soldier in Holland and Belgium, then went to live in Frankfurt where he taught painting in the Art School until being dismissed by the Nazis.
He left to Berlin, later in Amsterdam before settling in USA in 1947. There he became professor in the St Louis University in Washington.
Again moving, now to New York, teaching at the Brooklyn Museum.
In 1950 he was awarded the Carnegie Prize and won another at Venice Biennale.
He was never identified with a particular movement. Neverthless he began as a post-impressionist, later expressionist.
Today I'll post only self-portraits.
