FRANCISCO ZUNIGA
1912-1998
He was a Mexican born in Guadalupe, Costa Rica.
His father was a sculptor of religious figures and by the age of 15 he began working with him.
This painter, sculptor and printmaker studied drawing, stone sculptor and engraving in the Escuela de Bellas Artes in San José, Costa Rica.
Later, he joined the faculty "La Esmeralda", the prestigious School of painting and sculpture of the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico.
Zuniga combined his classical style with the Aztec forms as we may see in his works of female peasant natives.
He created a lot of public sculptures and monuments but his last works were terra cotta sculptures because he was almost blind.
