ANDRÉ  MASSON
This painter and graphic was born on the 4th January 1896 in Oise, France.
Very young went with is family to Brussels and studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts. Later studied arts in Paris.
During the 1st World War was seriously injured and after several months in the hospital returned to Paris.
He became friend of Juan Gris and was influenced of Cubism. In 1923 he produced his first symbolic picture. From 1925 he was for a while associated with the Surrealists, contributing  to their exhibitions, but he was not included in 1928.
From 1934 to 1936 he was working in Catalonia, Spain.
In the 2nd World War was condemned by Nazis as degenerated and  escaped the Nazi regime moving to the United States. Returned  to France only after the war, living and working  in Aix-en-Provence.
Masson deals with all the violent emotions and actions of mankind and animals and expresses an agressive, convulsive eroticism. He transcended his early Cubist style by means of symbols suggested to him by a world full of drama and despair.
Living in south of France brought some serenity into his work, and died old in 1987.
