OTTO DIX
(1891-1969)
Born at Unterhausen, Thuringia in Germany.
Studied in Dresden and Dusseldorf. Settled in Berlin, then in 1927 moved to Dresden, where he became professor at the Academy forced to resign in 1933.
He served in the German army during the last war and then, in 1946, went to Hemmenhofen where he lived the rest of his life
Otto Dix, as a painter and printmaker, began working in a realistic style, as in his portrait of his parents. His keen sense of reality and truth led him to a technique known at Neue Sachlichkeit. As with Grosz, his work provides a satirical commentary on wartime and post-war life. His last paintings were religious allegories.
In 1959 he was awarded with the Grand Merit Cross of the Federal Republic of Germany, and among many others, in 1968 received the Rembrandt Prize of the Goethe Foundation in Salzbourg.
