FRITS VAN DEN BERGHE
(1883-1939)
Born in Ghent, Belgium.
Studied at the local art-school. In 1905 he settled in Laethem-Saint-Martin and, with Permeke and the brothers Gustave and Léon de Smet, he formed the second Laethern group.
In 1913 he spent six months in the United States, and during the first war he lived in Holland.
Returning to Belgium in 1922 he lived at Ostend and at Laethern, and in 1925 he settled definitevly in Ghent.
He was a member of the Group des IX, Art Vivant and Art Contemporain. A gifted artist, a man of great culture and remarkable intelligence. A fantastic expressionist.
