PAULA REGO

1935, Lisbon, Portugal.

She is one of the most celebrated artists in London where she still lives and works.

Portugal was under the dictatorship of Salazar when she was a little girl and went to finish school in Kent. Also studied at the Slade School of Fine Art. 

After the marriage with the artist Victor Willing she settled in London.

Paula Rego received several awards and in 2010 she was made Dame of the British Empire.

She  is the painter of the childwood stories, the taboos and the magic realism. 

She was the first artist-in-residence at the National Gallery in London.

Vi muitos trabalhos seus em exposições um pouco por onde andei, mas a que considerei mais significativa foi a retrospectiva apresentada no Centro Cultural de Belém, em Lisboa, sobretudo por cobrir um vasto periodo da sua obra, quase 50 anos, o que me permitiu perceber a fabulosa trajectória da artista.

As figuras humanas, os animais, as inúmeras histórias que as suas pinturas nos contam e a emoção que nos transmitem fazem de Paula Rego uma artista única.
