SÉRAPHINE film

This French-Belgian film directed by Martin Provost shows the real life of a middle-aged housekeeper and painter called SÉRAPHINE LOUIS dite Séraphine Seulis.
Who had the chance to see this film can understand her moments, long walks, swimming in the river, singing, embracing the trees. The sound of the wind.
We are captivated from beginning to the end.
Of course, the actress Yolande Moreau was crucial in the several awards and nominations this film got. Her eyes are unforgettable.

But the  film  is much more than that, is the real life of Séraphine Louis born in 1864 in Arsy, France.

As she lost her mother on her first birthday and her father 6 years later, the eldest sister took care of her. But soon she had to work  as housekeeper in rich families.

This self-taught artist was, at the time, considered a Naive painter, painting as a way to act out a sort of compulsion. The Visionary Art as we could call it now.

She had the chance to knew Wilhem Uhde and with his patronage her artistic life began. But in 1930, no more chance and no more able to sell her paintings, the depression and mental problems began. 

She lived the last years of her life in an asylium in Clermont were she died in 1942.

All art is an interpretation and no one is in position to judge her "visions" nor to legitimatize or not her incarceration in an asylum.
