MARC CHAGALL
7 July 1887, Vitebsk, Russia - 28 March, 1985, St Paul de Vence, France
Studied art in St Petersburg and when he arrived in Paris, in 1910, Cubism was full swing.
Without coming under the influence of either Picasso or Braque, he nevertheless adopted their conception of space.
When he returned to Russia he was offered, like Kandinsky, a teaching post in his native country. At the same time he worked for the Jewish Theatre in Moscow.
Passing through Berlin he returned to Paris but in 1941 he took refuge in America.
Back to Paris after the war his work became based in the symbolism of icons, Jewish mysticism and memories of youth.
