GEORGES BRAQUE
13 May 1882, Argenteuil - 31 August 1963, Paris, France
Son of a house painter he was educated in Le Havre and went to Paris in 1900 to continue his studies at the Academie Humbert.
In the first year of his artistic life he was a fauvist painter. But when he met Picasso, in 1907, they both promoted Cubism and, in 1912, he was the first one to undertake 'collages'.
After being seriously wounded in the first world war he lost his normal capacity of work and designed sets for Diaghilev's ballets.
His art, very often inspired by ancient Greece, finds expression in painting, sculpture and engravings.
His first big exhibition was in Basel, Switzerland.
In 1948 he was awarded the Grand Prix of Venice Biennale.
Most of his last works, as expressionist, were etchings, lithographs and stage decors. He was also responsible for the decoration of a large ceiling in the Louvre Museum.
