He lived in Iowa almost all his life. Only for a short periode of time left his home to visit Europe and stay (1923) in Paris to study at the Académie Julien. He had also the chance to see and be influenced by the German an Flemish masters of the 16th century.
He was trained as a craftsman and designer as well as painter.
Grant was the creator of the American Gothic in 1930. Also the farmer painter.
