BRASSAI
1899-1984
With his real name Guyla Halasz he was born in Brasov, Romania, at that time, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Son of Hungarian father and Armenian mother.
He studied painting and sculpture at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest.
In Paris, with the camera in hand and the pseudonym Brassai, based on his birth place (Brasov), he began taking pictures at Montparnasse, the heart of Art and the bohemian life.
Later, he worked for American Harper's Bazaar and continue his artistic works as sculptor, photographer and film maker.
He received several awards, honors and his investiture as Chevalier de l'Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur in 1976.
Henry Miller called him "the eye of Paris".
