ANDRÉ MASSON
1896-1987
Born in Balagny-sur-Thérain, near Paris, France.
Studied in Belgium at the Académie des Beaux Arts in Brussels and later, when returned to France, at the École Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris.
During the War he was severely injured. After long spells in the Hospital in the Somme he left the Cubism to embrace Surrealism.
During the Second War he and his family moved to Connecticut in the USA.
In 1946 returned to France living in Aix-en-Provence focusing on painting landscapes and designing for the theatre.
The painting "Le miel et le lait", executed in 1968, was part of ongoing exploration of Greek Mythology.
He was one of the major contributors to Surrealism seen in two retrospective exhibitions in Basel (1950) and New York (1976).
