DANA MICHAHELLES
1933-2002
Born in Florence, Italy.
She attended the Institute of Fine Arts in Florence but had to leave soon because went with her parents to Mozambique, at the age of 15. She lived in Lourenço Marques, now called Maputo, almost 30 years before returning back to Italy.
In her private life she was surrounded by art and artists. Her father, uncle and grand father were artists.
In Mozambique worked as a draftsman in the studio of the famous Portuguese architect Pancho Guedes, when everything was still drafted by hand.
This was like a school permitting her to develop a fine sense of proportion and perspective, and also the use of pen and ink.
There Dana also worked as collaborator at the Nucleo de Arte in the preparation of several art exhibitions.
When I was a child I saw her serveral times drawing in the streets of Lourenço Marques. She was one of the first artist I had the chance to know at that time. With her works I began my fascination for pen and ink drawings.
In 2001, in Portugal, Editora Caminho published the book named Dana Michahelles with great part of her works.
Dana is relatively unknown in Italy but in 2013 Florence prepared a retrospective exhibition named "Drawing of Tuscany".
