MAX ERNST
1891-1976
Was born on the 2nd April in Bruhl, Germany.
The son of an amateur painter, he studied Philosophy, Literature and Art History at Bonn University.
As a painter he was a self-taught. His first exhibition was in Berlin in 1913. Then is artistic life was interrupted by the World War as he was sent to fight in front.
From 1919 he took part of the Dada movement, started in Zurich in 1916.
In 1920 he exhibited his first collages which greatly influenced surrealist ideas. Then settled in Paris and became one of the promoters of Surrealism.
From 1941 to 1945 lived in New York then moved to Sedona, Arizona.
In his artistic life he paints, draw, make collages, sculpture and illustration in several books.
In his personal life he had 5 marriages, in 1918, 1927, 1937, 1942 and in 1946.
Died in Paris where he was living at the time.
