THÉOPHILE ALEXANDRE STEINLEN
(1859-1923)
Was born in Lausanne, Switzerland where he studied literature.
He was an art nouveau painter and a printmaker after studied at the University in Lausanne.
Moved to Paris in 1878, living in Montmartre collaborating, with his posters, at the Cabaret Le Chat Noir . He quickly established himself as a leading illustrator of popular journals as Le Rire and Gil Blas.
Also worked a lot as a designer of posters and, as a painter, often painted scenes of life in Montmartre. Some of those posters were against the 1st War and in that case signed under a pseudonym.
He held his first exhibition in 1885 at La Bodinière.
Today his work can be seen at most of the great museums of the world.
