MALANGATANA
(Valente Ngwenya)
(1936-2011)
This painter, poet, actor and singer was born in Matalana, Mozambique.
As a young boy went to Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) to find work and study. And ten years later it happened his first solo exhibition helped by the architect Pancho Guedes.
Because of political reasons spent a few months in jail, before the independence of Mozambique.
Only years later could work as a full-time artist and soon became one of the Africa's best known contemporary artists.
He was awarded in Mozambique and Portugal and in 1997 he was named a UNESCO Artist of Peace.
His work is part of private and public collections and also in several museums from South Africa to India, Germany or Norway among many others.
