RENE MAGRITTE
(1898-1967)
He was born in Lessines, Belgium.
In 1916 moved to Brussels to study at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts where he was exposed to cubism and futurism as we may see in his first paintings. He was really absorbed into Belgium's growing surrealist movement.
In 1927 was the year of his first exhibition. Not a success.
Disaponted he went to Paris living and working for a couple of years.
It is not true that most of his paintings were selfportraits as we may see by the few exemples here.
He was also an amateur photographer and filmmaker.
Once he said "To be a surrealist means barring from your mind all remembrance of what you have seen."
He died almost 50 years ago but the Magritte's impact lives on.
