ED VAN DER ELSKEN
(1925-1990)
He was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Ed wanted to be a sculptor, and studied for that, but became one of the most influential photographer and filmmaker.
In 1950, after the war, he went to Paris where he worked in the darkrooms of the Magnum Photography Agency and had the chance to work for Cartier-Bresson and Robert Capa.
Returned to Amsterdam in 1955 and began to travel to Africa, Japan and Tokyo.
He married three times with three photographers.
In the first period of his career, as a photographer, he took only black and white photos, but in the last 30 years he prefered colour.
He produced 14 books, broadcasted 20 films and his works remain shown at contemporary art museums from Tokyo to Italy.
